<P align=left>The 200<FONT color=#000080>8</FONT> GPET Convention will have an overriding theme based on the spirit of the Olympic Games – personal achievement<BR>through teamwork. There will be four sub-themes for this year’s Convention - ‘Registrars as teachers’; ‘Recruitment to general practice’; ‘What are we training for - general practice in the future’; and ‘Coaching for a personal best’<FONT color=#000080>:</FONT> </P>
<UL>
<LI>Broadening supervision to include registrars as teachers is critical if general practice is to meet the challenges brought about by a substantial increase in medical students</LI>
<LI>Recruitment of both registrars and supervisors to general practice is vital if we are to meet the needs of the community and the profession</LI>
<LI>Medical educators and administrators must think about where general practice is heading and how it might change if we are to provide appropriate and forward-looking training; and</LI>
<LI>A focus on personal performance and getting the best results for each individual registrar is essential. </LI></UL>
<P align=left>Each of the above themes will be explored through symposia, which will aim to involve the entire convention audience in discussion of the important issues facing general practice education and training, in developing ways forward, and in endeavouring to achieve the best possible outcomes in the years ahead. As always, the Convention will be held in a spirit of collegiality and shared enthusiasm that should send participants back to their regions with new ideas and energy.<BR><BR><STRONG><FONT size=3>Convention objectives</FONT></STRONG></P>
<P>The General Practice Education and Training Convention provides an annual national forum for those involved in vocational education and training in general practice and rural medicine. The Convention aims to: </P>

<LI>Bring delegates together to focus on future opportunities and challenges in general practice vocational training</LI>
<LI>Showcase innovation in medical education and training</LI>
<LI>Provide opportunities for networking and cross-fertilisation of ideas</LI>
<LI>Provide opportunities for GP trainers and educators to acquire skills from each other</LI>
<LI>Provide an opportunity for the academic advancement of general practice training</LI>
<LI>Cater to and welcome GP registrars and promote greater involvement of registrars in education and training</LI>
<LI>Contribute to the development and promotion of general practice as the career of choice for future generations</LI>
<LI>Develop solutions for the future needs of general practice training and promulgate them to the wider community</LI></UL>
