<P><FONT size=2><FONT face=Arial>RW Murray BVSc, MSc, MACVSc, FAVA, OAM</FONT></FONT></P> <P><FONT size=2><FONT face=Arial>This paper is more than just devil’s advocacy. It presents a sincere “no case” against mandatory desexing legislation on the grounds that it is wrongly conceived, will waste precious public resources and will impact negatively on pet access and pet ownership in Australia. While the <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">motivation</I> of those who advocate mandatory desexing legislation may be relatively straight forward, the foundation of their expectations of it is<I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"> not</I>. </FONT></FONT></P> <P><FONT size=2><FONT face=Arial>The best options for the management of unwanted companion animals in pounds and shelters can only rationally be derived from credible research that is yet to be seen. This paper cautions that the Australian community as well as Federal, State and Local Government agencies risk wasting irreplaceable animal welfare <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">and</I> animal management resources if they pursue random (unproven) remedies like mandatory desexing legislation at this time.
