There is a myriad of causes for problematic dog behaviour occurrences. The first we must be aware of is natural inherited instincts for hunting and survival that have passed through from the original ancestor (the wolf) on to the partially domesticated village dogs and finally to our modern domesticated dog. These instincts and drives need to be present to be successful in hunting, scavenging and protection of territory. They are known as prey drive, predatory instinct, guarding instinct and finally defence drive. All domestic dogs have a window of opportunity for correct timing of splitting and separation of the litter. Should this not be done at the correct time, there are psychological phenomenons on both the early and the late split times. Early injuries or illnesses can also be a contributing factor. Another predictor is a lack of correct early social exposure which can directly cause fear based aggression from not having a correctly timed and conditioned social attitude. Other predictors may be not identifying that some dogs possess either mental problems or extremely dominant and aggressive personalities that do not fit well in society or dogs that receive poor environmental conditions through neglect and especially defensive type training regimes. Environmental enhanced dominance can also be a good predictor.
